McNARY DAM

Construction 1947-1954      Powerhouse construction 1954-1957

1.4 mile long (7365ft) gravity, run of the river, dam. 183ft tall. 292 miles from the mouth of Columbia.

Creates Lake Wallula – 1,350,000 Acre-ft of water. Extends 64 miles behind the dam.

22 Spillway Gates

14 turbines – 1127MW capacity – Black start facility.

FISH LADDER

1 foot drop per weir

Two holes in weir to allow fish passage, won’t see many fish over the weir.

Ladder is designed to have a low flow to provide eddy current – low stress

Fish ladder attraction water is added at the entrance of the ladder to help fish enter the ladder.

About 90% of the ladder water is from attraction.

Ladder flow ~ 200cfs

Attraction flow ~ 1600cfs (fills a 3-bedroom house in about 8 seconds)

FISH LIFT

We previously used an elevator to raise the fish above the dam.

Now used as the By-Pass structure – When the unit is off line, the attraction flow is provided via by-pass to ensure fish ladder criteria is maintained.

PROJECT OPERATION

We provide fish ladder attraction water to the McNary Washington fish ladder.

This additional flow helps the upstream migrating fish to find the hole in the dam to enter the fish ladder. Once in the ladder the fish pass the attraction water and swim in a reduced flow area of the ladder. The design of the ladder allows fish to rest within a section without being washed down to the bottom.

Fish ladder has historically operated 11 months out of the year. This allows us to use the attraction water to generate electricity during most of the year.
